ReportAmerican Football Association of Japan (AFAJ) History: Founded in 1934 with three collegiate teams (Rikkyo, Meiji and Waseda) and in 1937 the west-east collegiate game attracted over 25,000 spectators. After an interval by the World War II, in 1940’s junior and senior high school teams appeared. In 1950’s, some teams had “T-formation” and “shot-gun” formation. Since 1970’s, many exchanges were made between U.S.A. and Japan and more exposures on TV broadcasting were available. Members:
  • High School teams (16-18 years old) [107 teams, 2,597 players]
  • Collegiate teams [224 teams, 9,053 players]
  • Corporate teams (company sponsored club teams and company owned teams) [73 teams, 5,292 players]
TOTAL: 404 teams, 16,942 players (as of 2002) Collegiate leagues: 8 regional categories; Kanto, Kansai, Hokkaido, Tohoku, Tokai, Hokuriku, Chu-Shikoku and Kyushu, games in September through December Corporate leagues: X-league (Division 1 to 4), games in September through December NOTE: In spring season, collegiate teams have exhibition games beyond the league borders and corporate teams have tournament called Pearl Bowl tournament.
